Denton, Texas – Opal Lee, a Civil Rights activist widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from her alma mater, the University of North Texas, adding yet another impressive title to her extensive repertoire of accomplishments.
The trailblazer from Fort Worth, who has dedicated her life to advocating for equal rights and social justice, was amongst the 6,700 graduates who graced the stage in a momentous commencement ceremony last weekend.
96 years young, Opal Lee received her Masters of Education degree from UNT in 1963, marking yet another monumental achievement in her storied career.
Apart from her educational and professional accomplishments, Lee holds a special place in the hearts of many as the tireless activist who fought for the successful designation of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, an effort that was finally realized on June 17, 2021, following years of advocacy and determination.
