9 injured, including 4 minors, in Florida Memorial Day shooting on Hollywood Broadwalk
A mass shooting occurred on Monday afternoon at the Hollywood Broadwalk, leaving nine people injured, including four minors who were transported to area hospitals. The ages of the victims range from 1-65 years old, with one person currently in surgery and the rest in stable condition. The incident took place near the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort in the 1200 block of N. Broadwalk.
According to Hollywood officials, the shooting began with an altercation between two groups, which quickly escalated into gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing people running away frantically from the scene on an area live cam at 6:41 p.m. The police have detained one person of interest and are currently searching for a second individual.
Several victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for treatment. Shocked tourists who witnessed the shooting described the scene, with one recounting seeing a young man on the ground bleeding and a lady with a wound to her leg. Another witness heard several gunshots and saw a crowd of people running through the area.
The Hollywood Mayor, Josh Levy, issued a statement thanking the immediate responders, including good Samaritans, paramedics, police, and emergency room doctors and nurses. The police swiftly responded to the scene and set up a large perimeter, with at least one roadway closed and the Hollywood Beach area from Johnson to Garfield Street and the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk advised to avoid while the investigation continues.
Chopper 4 images displayed several police cruisers, unmarked police vehicles, a crime scene van, and several fire-rescue trucks in the area. Access to Hollywood Beach remains closed, and the police have established a reunification area at Johnson St. and N. Ocean bus loop. Hollywood police are urging people to refrain from visiting the Hollywood Beach area during the ongoing investigation.
