Mississippi is still reeling from the destruction caused by a powerful EF-3 tornado that tore through the state last Friday. North Texas disaster response teams are now on the ground in Amory to start the long process of recovery, with Minuteman Disaster Response having deployed at least two dozen volunteers to the area.
Randy Rogan, speaking from the command center set up on Monday, reported that the devastation is “unbelievable.” Chain saw crews and skid steer tractors with grapple hooks have been brought in to help clear debris from properties and get the area back to normal.
John Hall with Texas Baptist Men said the immediate response could last weeks or even months, with some areas needing a complete restart. Hall commented that the destruction is “heartbreaking” and that teams will be doing whatever they can to help.
The response teams are prepared to spend several weeks in Mississippi helping with the clean-up and recovery effort. Despite the work that lies ahead, the teams remain optimistic and driven as they begin the hard task of rebuilding.
In the days following the tornado, the Mississippi community has been overwhelmed with generous donations and offers of help. As Minuteman Disaster Response begins their work, they look to the community for continued support as they strive to restore order to the lives of those affected by the storm.
Severe weather is possible again later this week, with the National Weather Service issuing a hazardous weather outlook for the area. While Mississippians stay vigilant, the response teams will be working hard to aid the recovery process and help return the area to its former glory.
