Dallas, TX – Reverchon Park in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas is set to undergo a major renovation project to restore its 1920s-era baseball field. Dallas Independent School District and several city leaders broke ground on the $5 million project, which will bring the historic ballpark back to life for community use.
The once-vibrant ballpark has been in a state of disrepair for years, with its playing field and other amenities in need of extensive renovations to make the space usable once again. The first phase of the project will focus on revitalizing the playing field, followed by improvements to the bullpens, batting cages, dugouts, and grandstands.
The redevelopment of the park has been a contentious issue in the community for several years. In 2020, an initial plan to give a private company control of the renovations and bring in a minor-league baseball team fell through due to concerns from neighbors about increased traffic and noise. A group of residents sued the city, citing a lack of transparency and arguing that the city’s plan to turn the public park over to private hands violated the law.
However, a new plan for restoring the park emerged in 2022, thanks in part to a $50,000 donation from Texas Rangers legend Michael Young. Under the new plan, Dallas ISD has agreed to a 30-year deal with the city council, jointly caring for the field. North Dallas High School will play its home games at the restored ballpark.
The project’s progress is a beacon of hope for the Oak Lawn community, as the restored ballpark will not only provide a beautiful space for baseball games and other community activities, but also serve as a reminder of the area’s rich history. The revitalization effort is a collaborative effort between community members, city officials, and Dallas ISD leadership, and showcases what can be achieved when people come together for a common goal.
