Area For-Profit Hospital Planned in Mid-Cities, Houston

United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) has filed paperwork with the state to expand its healthcare footprint into the North Texas region by constructing a new 23-bed hospital in the city of Hurst. This will be the first expansion for the Houston-based hospital operator, which currently has four locations in the Houston and Sugarland areas.

According to the application with the state, UMMC Mid-Cities Hospital will be a for-profit facility and is eligible to participate in the Medicare program. The hospital will provide a range of services, including surgery, X-ray, clinical laboratory, and emergency department. However, obstetrics, mental health, and pediatric issues will not be treated at this facility.

In 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) terminated the UUMC Medicare contract after failing to meet specific health and safety standards. This was followed by reports of operating rooms with rusty equipment, unsanitary cabinets, cockroaches, open floor drains, and staff without proper certifications. In response, the system replaced its governing board.

The Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade has given UUMC’s main campus in Houston an F, its North campus a D, and its Sugarland location an F in its most recent ratings. Some of these ratings were based on the hospital’s performance in categories such as falls, collapsed lungs, blood leakage, accidental cuts and tears, blood infections, sepsis infection, communication, safe medication administration, and responsiveness. The main campus’ score was additionally affected by its one-star patient experience rating.

The new hospital will be located where St. Camillus Medical Center once stood. St. Camillus appears to be closed, but its website is still up and running. The hospital’s leadership did not respond to attempts to contact them. UMMC-Mid Cities Hospital will be situated 2.5 miles east of Medical City North Hills, which has 157 staffed beds, and just under five miles west of Texas Health Hurst-Euless-Bedford, which has 251 staffed beds.

Syed Mohiuddin has been appointed as UMMC’s CEO. According to the Indo-American News, Mohiuddin is an “accomplished businessman and entrepreneur”. Attempts to contact UMMC’s leadership for further comment were unsuccessful.

UMMC’s new hospital in Hurst is sure to provide a much-needed expansion of high-quality healthcare services to the North Texas region.
