Ex-SMU student charged with threatening university staff

Dallas – A former graduate student of Southern Methodist University (SMU) has been arrested and charged with making what university authorities have deemed “serious, credible threats” to staff members. Brian Jackel, a 39-year-old former engineering student, was taken into custody at his residence in Duncanville by SMU police officers, who had obtained both a felony arrest warrant and a search warrant for his home.

The nature of the alleged threats made by Jackel has not been revealed by SMU officials, but the university’s police department has assured the public that the case is being taken seriously. Investigators have been examining evidence in the case to assess the extent of Jackel’s intentions to cause harm, and whether or not he was capable of carrying out the threats he made.

Upon his arrest, Jackel was booked at the Dallas County Jail, where he is currently being held while awaiting trial. Officials have issued a statement urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.

Jackel’s behavior serves as a reminder that threats, no matter how remote they may seem, should always be taken seriously. Schools, businesses, and other institutions should have protocols and plans in place to handle threats to their employees, students, and customers. This includes the implementation of threat assessment teams, who can quickly assess any incident and determine the appropriate course of action.

As the investigation into Jackel’s alleged threats continues, SMU officials are encouraging students and faculty members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity they may encounter on campus. With the threat of violence and terrorism increasingly prevalent in today’s society, it is essential that we all take steps to ensure the safety of ourselves and others. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact SMU Police Department at 214-768-3333.
