Frisco and McKinney among the safest suburbs in U.S., recent study shows
Frisco, Texas – In the quest for an idyllic suburban retreat, prospective residents grapple with a multitude of considerations, such as school quality, pedestrian-friendliness, and job proximity. However, arguably the most salient concern among these factors is the suburb’s perceived safety—a multifaceted parameter influenced by a variety of elements.
SmartAsset analyzed 370 suburbs situated in America’s 100 largest cities
In a recent comprehensive analysis, SmartAsset—a prominent personal finance website—scrutinized 370 suburbs situated in America’s 100 largest cities, taking into account several safety-related metrics. The parameters considered included violent and property crime rates gleaned from FBI data, prevalence of excessive drinking among adults, traffic-related fatalities, and incidences of drug poisoning, the latter two sourced from County Health Rankings.
SmartAsset’s study unfolded an intriguing geographical distribution of safety; suburbs nestled in the East Coast and the Midwest emerged as bastions of security. In contrast, their counterparts in the West and South found themselves languishing in the lower echelons of the safety ranking.
SmartAsset found Great Falls, Virginia to be the safest suburb in America
One suburb that conspicuously stood out was Great Falls, Virginia. Located along the picturesque Potomac River and within a stone’s throw of Washington D.C., this suburb—once home to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin—ascended to the zenith of SmartAsset’s safety list.
The census-designated locale clocked an impressively low violent crime rate of 6.81 per 100,000 residents, second only to Edgerton, Wisconsin, where crime rates were virtually nonexistent. Additionally, the suburb registered one of the lowest vehicle mortality rates. As an intriguing footnote, Great Falls topped the list for the highest median household income, at slightly above $250,000, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

In close geographical and rank proximity, Bethesda, Maryland earned third place in the safety ranking. The suburb’s commendably low rates of vehicle fatalities and excessive drinking contributed to its laudable standing. The remaining slots in the top five safest suburbs were dominated by Indiana, with Carmel securing the runner-up position, while Fishers and Noblesville completed the elite quintet.
The 10 safest suburbs, according to SmartAsset’s analysis, are:
- Great Falls, Virginia
- Carmel, Indiana
- Bethesda, Maryland
- Fishers, Indiana
- Noblesville, Indiana
- Lehi, Utah
- Fort Bliss, Texas
- Frisco, Texas
- Dacula, Georgia
- Castle Rock, Colorado
Two Texas cities are in the top 10 safest suburbs in America
Two Texan cities have ascended to the list of the top ten safest suburbs in the US, as per a recent comprehensive safety analysis. Fort Bliss, claiming the seventh spot, experienced almost 70 instances of violent crime per 100,000 residents. However, it managed to clinch a high score owing to a low vehicle mortality rate of 11.3 per 100,000 and a minor property crime rate of 218 per 100,000.
Two North Texas cities rank among the safest suburbs in America
Subsequent to Fort Bliss in the ranking, the city of Frisco grabbed the eighth position, marked by an impressive vehicular mortality rate of 6.4 per 100,000 residents. McKinney, yet another Texan locale, although positioned 13th in the overall ranking, mirrored Frisco’s vehicular mortality rate, albeit it witnessed a heightened frequency of violent episodes.
The top 50 saw further representation from the state of Texas, with Georgetown securing the 26th rank, Schertz and Anthony sharing the 31st spot, Cedar Park occupying the 34th position, and West University Place slotting in at 47.
However, the analysis did not portray all Texas suburbs in a positive light. A case in point is Aransas Pass, which languished as the 24th least-safe suburb in the nation and held the dubious distinction of being the least-safe suburb in Texas. The city was plagued by a violent crime rate of 645 incidents per 100,000 residents and a vehicle mortality rate of 13 per 100,000, contributing to its lower standing in the safety ranking.
