Plano, Texas – In a vivid illustration of the community spirit embodied by the “Where Community Grows” theme of this year’s National Park and Recreation Month, Plano Parks and Recreation has issued a clarion call to artists. Emphasizing that talent knows no bounds, the organization is encouraging artists, regardless of age, skill level or experience, to construct a unique visual representation of what Plano’s parks and recreation landscape signifies to them.

Residents are being given the opportunity to translate their personal experiences of parks and recreation in Plano into riveting artistic expressions. In return for their creative endeavours, they stand a chance to be rewarded with a variety of enticing prizes such as yearly recreation passes, pool cabana rentals and assorted giveaways. Furthermore, the artist of the most outstanding masterpiece will be bestowed with the honor of seeing their artwork featured in the 2024 Summer Catalog, a reward that transcends the tangible.

The competition’s deadline is set for Sunday, July 30, with submissions due by 5 p.m. The contest is structured into three distinct age brackets: 5-12 years, 13-18 years, and 19 years and above. In an effort to accommodate a range of artistic styles and expressions, a wide array of mediums — including but not limited to pencil, chalk, paint, digital formats, textiles, and recycled materials — will be accepted.
To submit their artwork, participants are required to provide key details such as their name, age category, contact information, and a succinct description of their piece. Submissions can be made via email by sending a high-resolution photograph of the artwork to [email protected], specifying “Art Contest Submission” in the subject line. Alternatively, participants can hand-deliver their work to the Plano Parks and Recreation main office, located at 5901 Los Rios Blvd., or any of the local recreation centers.
“Local parks are often our first experiences in nature, our introduction to a favorite hobby or physical activity. They are places to gather with friends and family to celebrate life’s special moments as well as spots of respite and healing,” Plano Parks and Recreation Director Ron Smith said. “This is the perfect time to reflect on and appreciate all the ways our community is stronger, more vibrant and more resilient because of parks and recreation.”
To take part in the festivities online, community members are encouraged to follow Plano Parks and Recreation on Facebook and Instagram. These platforms will feature submissions and will stimulate creativity with engaging fun facts and activity ideas throughout National Park and Recreation Month.
Community members can share their unique parks and recreation narratives by tagging the organization and using the hashtag #WhereCommunityGrows.
