Dallas Animal Services seeks help, says adoptions and fosters are urgently needed to free shelter space
Dallas, Texas – Dallas Animal Services is asking residents to step forward as the shelter deals with a sharp rise in animals and a level of crowding officials say has become critical.
The shelter, one of the largest municipal animal shelters in the country, is already caring for hundreds of dogs and cats. This week, the pressure grew even heavier after DAS took in animals from three large-scale cruelty seizures, adding to a population that had already stretched the facility past its preferred limits.
DAS aims to operate at about 80% capacity so animals can be cared for safely and staff can keep room available for new arrivals and emergency cases. Current numbers are far above that goal. Shelter leaders say the crowding is reducing flexibility, straining daily resources and making each adoption, foster placement or pet reunion more urgent.
“Our shelter is beyond the population level that allows us to operate most effectively,” said Victoria Chittam Bennett, Assistant Director of Dallas Animal Services. “Our staff and volunteers continue to provide compassionate care to every animal who comes through our doors, but we cannot do this alone. The community’s support is critical right now. Every adoption, every foster placement, every volunteer shift, and every pet reclaimed by its owner creates space and resources for another animal in need.”
The timing is making the challenge harder. Shelter officials said recent rain, followed by rising summer temperatures, may be keeping some visitors away and slowing adoptions. At a moment when the shelter needs steady public traffic, every empty kennel matters. Every animal that leaves safely opens space for another that may arrive the same day.
DAS is urging residents to help in several ways. Families ready for a pet can adopt. Those not ready for a long-term commitment can foster. Others can volunteer, share adoptable animals online, or check quickly for lost pets that may already be waiting at the shelter. Reclaiming a missing pet as soon as possible also helps free space and reunites animals with the people who know them best.
The shelter’s message is direct: community action can save lives now. Available pets, foster and volunteer information, rescue opportunities and other ways to support Dallas Animal Services are listed at https://BeDallas90.org.
