Dallas, Texas – In response to the relentless triple-digit heatwave that continues to assail the metropolitan area, the City of Dallas initiated a crucial precaution on Sunday, August 13th, opening Temporary Inclement Weather Cooling Centers (TIWCC) across various locations.
A total of four cooling centers were operational in Dallas on Sunday
These centers, operating as a part of a strategic initiative by the city, underscore the administration’s unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of its residents. Four such centers were operative this past Sunday, with a city press release detailing the specific locales and operational hours:
- Austin Street Center: 2929 Hickory Street, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Jaycee-Zaragoza Recreation Center: 3114 Clymer Street, noon to 8 p.m.
- Kiest Park Recreation Center: 3080 S. Hampton Road, noon to 8 p.m.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center: 2901 Pennsylvania Ave., noon to 8 p.m.
Emphasizing a comprehensive approach to community welfare, these centers are outfitted with air conditioning systems, hydration facilities, and essential amenities meticulously designed to enhance community health and safety.
In an orchestrated effort to mitigate the health risks posed by these soaring temperatures, residents were ardently urged to avail themselves of these sanctuaries. Each cooling center was staffed with skilled professionals, adept at attending to those in need, as well as distributing hydration. In a collaborative stance, the City has actively partnered with local entities to bolster accessibility, ensuring those in need are cognizant of these vital resources.
“As we continue to navigate new issues concerning severe inclement weather, we thank OHS partners who continue to make temporary inclement weather shelters and cooling centers possible” said Christine Crossley, Director of the City’s Office of Homeless Solutions.
“OHS thanks Austin Street Center, Dallas Public Library, Dallas Fire-Rescue, Office of Emergency Management, Dallas Police Department, City Security, area shelters, service providers and temporary inclement weather providers for moving together to efficiently focus our collective efforts.”

For those experiencing homelessness, a continuum of care is offered beyond the aforementioned TIWCC sites, as the city’s existing network of overnight shelter provider locations stands ready to accommodate them.
The City of Dallas has pledged to maintain this essential service, with plans to periodically open additional cooling centers as the extreme heat persists.
